James S Voorhees Jr was born in Nashville, TN on June
5th 1965. Jim, or Jamie, as he is known by family and
close friends, showed an early proclivity towards visual
expression as was evidenced by the crayon scrawlings
on the basement walls. Jim's mother often proclaimed that
he's been drawing for as long as he's been able to hold a
drawing tool. Jim took several art courses at the local art
center in his teens, a place where he would return to teach
years later.
After high school, Jim attended the well regarded
Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh where he was
accepted into both the School of Fine Art and the School
of Visual Design. Not shabby for someone with an otherwise
uninspired high school performance.
Jim immediately decided on the department of Illustration,
his passion for the dynamic art form undiminished by the
contemptuous, sneering and disparaging regard held by
CMU's more elitist "fine artists." It was there that he would
find his niche. After graduation, Jim moved to Seattle,
sampling a few commercial art opportunities but found
nothing satisfying...or financially rewarding. He returned
East and completed a Masters program in art education at
the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. He began teaching
high school art while freelancing small jobs here and there
and it was his class offerings in illustration that most
satisfied him, prompting him to return to more art education,
this time at Syracuse University. There, under guidance from
the likes of Chris Payne, Anita Kunz, Murray Tinkleman,
Vincent DiFate, Bob Dacy and more, Jim rekindled his
enthusiasm and honed his craft with a perfect 4.0 GPA.
In the last 5 years Jim has discovered a new and thriving
interest-caricature illustration. Jim still teaches high school
art as well as Cartooning and Comic art at the Chester County
Art Center and at the Chester County Night School. He is
happily married and lives in Chester County, PA. In his free
time he enjoys skydiving, motorcycling, skiing, guitar and
martial arts.
